Address Field

Last modified: September 26, 2026

Introduction

The Address Field provides visitor-facing address input and synchronizes a selected or resolved location with a Geocoder Field. It supports current-location detection and real-time suggestions through Places API (New).

Available in: Starter, Pro, and Agency. Address autocomplete requires Places API (New) on the Browser API Key.

Important: Add the Address Field from Ninja Geolocation's Geolocation Fields group. Ninja Forms' native Address field does not connect to a Ninja Geolocation Geocoder and cannot drive synchronized maps, coordinates, distance, or directions.

Configuring the Address Field

Geocoder Field

Select the Geocoder Field that should process and store this address as a structured location. Use a separate Geocoder for every independent location in the form.

Locator Button

The inline Locator Button is enabled by default and uses the same Geocoder as the Address Field.

  • Enable Locator Button: shows or hides the location button inside the Address Field.
  • IP Address Locator: when a global IP provider is configured, choose whether IP lookup is disabled, used by default, or used only when browser location fails.
  • Location Found Message: sets the success message; leave it empty to disable the message.
  • Hide Location Failed Message: hides the default failure message.

Browser location normally requires HTTPS and visitor permission. IP-based location is less precise and may represent a network or service-provider location.

Address Autocomplete

Autocomplete is enabled by default. As the visitor types, the field requests suggestions from Places API (New). Selecting a suggestion sends the returned place, formatted address, and coordinates to the connected Geocoder.

Enable Force Selection from Suggestions when the submitted address must come from an autocomplete result. Customize the accompanying validation message to explain that the visitor must choose a suggestion.

Typing text alone does not guarantee that every downstream process has completed. Fields such as Address Validation, Distance, and Directions react after the connected Geocoder resolves the location.

Language, Place Types, and Countries

  • Language: sets the preferred language for autocomplete results.
  • Autocomplete Results Types: limits suggestions to the selected supported place types.
  • Country Restrictions: accepts one or more supported two-letter country codes.

Country restrictions limit eligible results. They are separate from the global country default and from result bias, which influences ranking without necessarily excluding every result outside the preferred area.

Autocomplete Bias and Bounds

  • Disabled: applies no additional geographic bias or boundary.
  • Proximity: uses a latitude, longitude, and radius around a preferred point.
  • Area Bounds: uses southwest and northeast coordinates to define a rectangular area.
  • User Location (IP): uses the configured IP-location provider as the visitor-location bias.

Test the intended country, place type, and bias combination. Google controls the final availability and ranking of suggestions.

Setting Up and Using the Address Field

  1. Add a Geocoder Field to the form.
  2. Add the Address Field from the Ninja Geolocation field group.
  3. Select the Geocoder Field in the Address Field's Geolocation settings.
  4. Configure the inline Locator Button if visitors should detect their location.
  5. Configure autocomplete, forced suggestion selection, language, place types, countries, and geographic bias as needed.
  6. Optionally add Coordinates or Map Fields connected to the same Geocoder.
  7. Save the form and test typed text, selected suggestions, locator behavior, and connected fields on the frontend.

Saved Value and Outputs

The Address Field saves the visible address string. The connected Geocoder Field saves the normalized full-location JSON, including structured address components, coordinates, formatted address, Place ID, and related location data when available.

Use the Geocoder's dynamic outputs or merge-tag parts when notifications, calculations, or integrations need a specific property such as city, postcode, latitude, longitude, or the complete structured location.

Troubleshooting

The Address field cannot select a Geocoder

Add a Geocoder Field to the form first. Also confirm that this is the Address Field from Ninja Geolocation's Geolocation Fields group; Ninja Forms' native Address field does not contain the plugin's Geolocation settings.

No autocomplete suggestions appear

Confirm that Maps JavaScript API and Places API (New) are enabled, billing is active, and the Browser API Key allows the page's exact HTTP referrer. Temporarily remove place, country, and bias restrictions to determine whether a setting excludes the expected result.

A typed address does not update connected fields

Select an autocomplete suggestion or otherwise allow the connected Geocoder to resolve the address. When Force Selection from Suggestions is enabled, manually entered text is intentionally rejected until a suggestion is selected.

The Locator Button does not update the address

Confirm that the Address Field and inline Locator Button use the same Geocoder, the page uses HTTPS, and browser location permission is available. If using IP behavior, confirm that a global provider is configured.

An upgraded form works only through a legacy Places path

Ninja Geolocation 3.5 temporarily retains a legacy fallback for specific existing behavior when Places API (New) is unavailable. The fallback does not cover billing, quota, referrer, or invalid-key errors and is not a replacement for enabling Places API (New).
